Making Friends?

Today was odd.

One of my classes let out early so i had a 2 hour break until my next class that I spent on a couch in a computer lounge, laptop and headphones in full force.

After the first hour of solitude, a girl saunters in and unloads on a couch about 6 feet in front of me. At first she slumps down and starts to read her neuropsychology textbook. This turns into laying on the couch while reading her textbook and then soon into sleeping on the couch using the textbook as a pillow. I don’t really notice her presence much until minutes later when she engages in a full body twitch. This catches my eye.

5:45 rolls by and it’s time for me to head to my next class across campus. It seems that moments before i removed my headphones her cell phone alarm sounded as she starts to pack up her things the moment i do. I try not to stare as she mumbles to herself while getting ready to leave because staring is socially rude.

“You got a 6 o’clock class too?” she asks.

I almost don’t respond. Why would she be talking to me?

“Yeah.” I respond awkwardly.

“Yeahhh i’ve been here since early this morning.”

“ok…”

“Still got another night class too…”

“Yeah….It’s been a long day.”

I’m trapped. She seems to want to keep talking. As I’m trying to figure out how I can gracefully leave this situation she extends her hand to me

“I’m Julia (pronounced yulia). Nice to meet you”.

“Cienna. Nice to meet you.”

After an overly firm handshake I formulate an escape plan.

“Ya know I actually have to walk all the way to the Berrie Center so I gotta get going.”

“Oh well I’m headed to A wing. Do you want to wait a second and then walk over with me?”

Interesting…That wasn’t the pleasant goodbye I was expecting. So we walk together. Me and the girl that twitched in her sleep. I embrace this moment and begin to initiate the conversation as we walk. We discuss the ugly green color they used to repaint the hallway over break. At least the weather was nice today we decide.

And just as abruptly as she entered my life, she leaves to take a short cut. Goodbye Julia. I’m sure I will never see you again.
